After Spoon we headed over to the rock poster show which was awesome. It is great to see talented artists finding their niche in the world. I would have bought a bunch of posters if I had a place to hang them...
Next we watched Seattle's own Jeremy Enigk. It was a cool crowd (which makes all the difference). Lots of interaction with Jeremy and pretty chill which is nice during a full day with not much more than 12 inches of personal space at best. It definitely felt like a hometown gig and Jeremy's sound takes me back to the 90's Seattle thing. Part pop / part screaming, you know what I'm talking about.
In the evening we went to the Blue Scholars / Kanye West shows. Blue Scholars were fun, rapping about local hangouts like "The Ave" and having the crowd chant local area codes ("When I say 2-0 you say 6, 2-0 6 2-0 6"). They have a cool sound, I might have to buy one of their albums.
Kanye was fun but not as polished (though he has sold like 10,000 times more albums). I think he is a studio master and he has charisma to spare but the show was disjointed and at times lights went dark and no one knew whether to clap or not, etc...
It was so crowded at the evening shows and the air was so polluted that people were passing out around us and it became a bit too intense towards the end. We retreated to the stands for the last few tunes.
The next day, Lisa and I took Lucy to her first Bumbershoot. We watched our friends in Izabelle for their first official Bumbershoot appearance. Back in the day, Shawn and Craig used to play on the sidewalk outside of Bumbershoot so it was fun to see them on stage at the EMP.
Funny story, unlike the other venues at Bumbershoot, the EMP stage kept the crowds outside until the band was ready to play. The Izabelle folks didn't realize this and the were afraid their worst nightmare was coming true and absolutely no one was going to show up to see them play. A few minutes before the show was to start, the staff opened the doors and let in the few hundred people that were waiting there (much to the band's relief). :)
