Last week, Lucy and I took a road trip down to the Yelm Worm Farm to pick up a "Worm Factory" and two pounds of Red Wigglers.
Our interest in worms started when we were reading the Tilth book and discovered that worms eat napkins (among many other things). Lucy and I couldn't believe it and had to see for ourselves.
We've been reusing milk cartons for lots of gardening tasks. This one is our worm food container. Fruit, veggies, grains, and napkins get saved for the worms to turn into rich garden soil (the worms are vegan).
The seeds we ordered arrived a few days ago. We ordered about a dozen different varieties. The ones in the picture are what we started today:
- "Yellow Pear" Cherry Tomatoes
- "Green Globe" Artichokes
- "Copra" Onions
- Gypsy Peppers
- Asparagus
- Jalapeno Peppers
- Italian Alpine Strawberries
Basically we are following the advice of "The Maritime Northwest Garden Guide" by the Seattle Tilth organization. I have decided to go organic or bust. No chemical fertilizers or pest control. So, we'll see if we are up to the challenge. From my point of view, besides not wanting to eat chemicals, the garden will be much more educational and interesting if we don't nuke everything.
